Microsoft is shutting down Wunderlist on May 6, 2020. If you're still using this once-popular task management application, it's time to switch. Microsoft purchased Wunderlist, and the Wunderlist team is now working on Microsoft To Do. But that's not your only option.

You Have Until June 30 to Import Tasks

The "importing tasks from Wunderlist" message in Microsoft To Do

While Wunderlist is shutting down on May 6, 2020, Microsoft says it will continue letting people import data from Wunderlist to Microsoft To Do for a while longer.

A blog post from Wunderlist originally said the migration feature will only be available "for a period of time" after the shutdown of Wunderlist. Now, it looks like you have until June 30, 2020, to import your data. After that time, it will likely be deleted from Wunderlist's servers.

How to Migrate Tasks to Microsoft To Do

The process of switching and importing your to-do lists from Wunderlist to Microsoft To Do is pretty simple.

First, head to the Microsoft To Do website. Ensure you're signed in with the Microsoft account you want to import your Wunderlist tasks to.

Click on the gear icon at the top-right corner of the window, then click "Import."

You'll be prompted to sign in with your Wunderlist account details.

Next, Microsoft To Do will show you what it's importing. If everything looks right, click "Import" to continue.

If you click the gear icon at the top-right corner again and click "Import Summary," you'll see more information about how the import was handled.

Items in the Wunderlist Inbox become tasks in the "Tasks" list. Subtasks become "Steps." Starred items become "Important" items. Folders become "Groups."

Alternatives to Microsoft To Do

If you love Wunderlist, Microsoft To Do is probably the closest alternative—after all, it's made by the same team.

However, it's not your only option. Our sister site Review Geek has run down the best replacements for Wunderlist, including Todoist, Any.do, Google Keep, Habitica, and Remember the Milk.

If you're into Apple's ecosystem services, the Reminders app for iPhone, iPad, and Mac is an easy-to-use alternative that syncs via iCloud.

If you prefer Google services, you can also try the new Google Tasks application, available in Gmail, Google Calendar, and in the Google Tasks app for iPhone, iPad, and Android.

Some services—like Todoist—can import from Wunderlist. However, you'll likely need to perform the import process before Wunderlist shuts down on May 6. It's time to switch.

What is HBO Max, and Is It Worth Paying For?

Posted: 01 May 2020 07:53 AM PDT

HBO Max and Fifteen Bucks

Decades before subscription-based television became the standard, HBO's paid service offered movies and original programming alongside music and comedy specials. HBO Max is the newest streaming service from its parent WarnerMedia and will exist alongside HBO Now and HBO Go.

HBO Max Is Premium Content for a Premium Price

At $14.99, it's not surprising that HBO Max is more expensive than most other online video streaming subscriptions. Fortunately, it's looking like the content offering will be worth the higher price tag. New HBO Max subscribers (and some HBO Now subscribers, depending on their provider) can enjoy some of the most acclaimed on-demand entertainment around for $14.99/month.

It's the same price as HBO Now, which is an existing service from HBO (not WarnerMedia) that doesn't include nearly as much content. It's also about twice as expensive as the base plans for competitors Netflix and Hulu. Currently, HBO Max will not feature ads. According to Variety, HBO Max will receive a cheaper ad-supported plan in 2021.

Viewers can watch HBO Max through most Android and Apple devices, including Apple TV, iPad, and iPhone. Apps for the service will also be available on most streaming devices like Roku, with the ability to watch through any web browser on your Windows and Mac machine. While the new standalone streaming service officially launches on May 27, 2020, you can already sign up for the service on the HBO Max website.

HBO Max is All HBO Content

The most attractive aspect of HBO Max is its massive content library. The new service combines the entire HBO library available through existing services like HBO NOW and HBO Go, along with premium content from partners like The Criterion Collection, BBC Studios, and Warner Bros. This is a WarnerMedia platform, after all.

Classic HBO hits like The Sopranos, Deadwood, Game of ThronesWestworld, and Sex and the City will be a huge draw for new subscribers, alongside a slew of new HBO content that includes some exciting reboots or continuations of beloved shows old and new: Perry Mason, The BoondocksAdventure TimeFriends, and a variety of heroes and villains from the world DC Comics.

HBO's comedy specials have always been a mainstay of the company's offerings, and HBO Max is no different. New, exclusive specials from Tracy Morgan, Conan O'Brien, John Early, Rose Matafeo, Ahir Shah, and James Veitch are all headed to HBO Max by 2021. Lastly, a huge amount of classic films, blockbusters, indie flicks, and original HBO movies will be available on demand.

HBO Max Is Not HBO Go or HBO NOW

Before HBO Max, the network offered two streaming options: HBO Go and HBO Now. HBO Go is an add-on only for cable subscribers, while HBO NOW functions similarly to HBO Max as a stand-alone, subscription-driven streaming service. The major difference between HBO Max and HBO NOW is the larger size of the content library on HBO Max. If you're an HBO NOW subscriber, you may qualify for free access HBO Max. It all depends on the third-party provider through which you subscribe to HBO NOW. HBO provides a helpful guide to changing your HBO NOW subscription if you're interested in the larger selection and exclusive content that comes with HBO Max. If you don't currently subscribe to any HBO service or product, HBO Max is the only name you need to remember.

Using the most confusing branding strategy possible, HBO Max will not be replacing HBO Now. Instead, both brands will exist side by side. This confusion is largely due to the fact that HBO Now can be purchased directly from HBO, but is often bundled into a larger package for consumers through third-party service providers like Hulu, Apple, Google, and Roku.

HBO wants to encourage customers to subscribe to HBO Max directly through HBO rather than purchasing HBO Now through a third-party company that takes a large cut of the monthly payment.

HBO Max Is Kid-Friendly

Most viewers familiar with HBO's content don't see it as a network for kids. That's for good reason as HBO prides itself on pushing the envelope in terms of violent and sexual content. Fortunately for parents and kids alike, HBO will be home to a massive backlog of family content including classic Warner Bros. entertainment like Looney Tunes. Most Studio Ghibli films will be available at launch, including classics like My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, and Princess Mononoke.

Sesame Street, one of the greatest and longest-running children's shows in TV history, has been heartbreakingly underfunded for years by the public coffers that used to support it. Now, the newest episodes premier exclusively on HBO (including HBO Max) before they find their way into the often underprivileged American homes they have always so deeply enriched via public television.

HBO Kids

It's unclear before launching whether or not HBO Max will provide parental controls to allow kids a viewing experience free from inappropriate content. HBO Go offers a simple but effective ratings-based restriction feature for parents eager to reign in the access kids have on the service. Given the way HBO has been advertising their range of kid-approved content, we can only assume that similar controls will be available in HBO Max, if not at launch then shortly thereafter.

Like most new streaming services, HBO Max is looking for a reason to join your existing portfolio of subscriptions. The quality and range of content easily makes HBO Max well worth the price tag of $14.99/month, especially if you only keep the subscription long enough to binge the shows you want.

Why Do Apps Disappear From the App Store and Play Store?

Posted: 01 May 2020 05:29 AM PDT

Have you ever tried to look for an app and realized it wasn't there? Here are the reasons an app might disappear from Apple's App Store or Google's Play Store.

Compatibility and Update Issues

One of the most common reasons why an app goes missing is simply because your device is no longer compatible with it.

If you're using an older device with an outdated version of Android, iOS, or iPadOS, an app might go missing from the store or be uninstallable. The same is true if the app's developer hasn't updated it in a very long time. Logs on both the App and Play Stores document when the last update occurred.

If this is the case, there's no other solution than to get a new device or look for a different app.

Apple or Google Remove It Entirely

The most common reason an app goes down is it breaks one or more of Apple or Google's store rules. There are many reasons why Apple or Google might decide to remove an app from their official stores. Here are some of the most frequently cited ones:

  • Violation of content policy: Both companies have policies that block apps that contain inappropriate or harmful content, promote illegal services, trade banned goods, or put people in danger. Both also prohibit all sexual content, particularly nudity and pornography.
  • Intellectual property: Apps that infringe on the intellectual property of someone else might be taken down. This is especially true of games that use characters or settings from popular properties without their permission. For these apps to be removed, the original IP holder files a petition with Apple or Google.
  • MalwareApps that might endanger your device or personal information are also prohibited. Examples of particularly malicious behavior include saving your contacts, uploading your personal information online, or misrepresenting what the app does. In some cases, these apps might monitor your phone use and sell that data to advertisers.
  • Non-functionality: This might be the case if an app stops working entirely or doesn't deliver its promised functionality.
  • Adware: This term describes software with highly obtrusive advertisements that nearly block out the core functionality of an app. Adware violates both Apple and Google's advertising rules.
  • Regulation: At times, regulation or changes to a law might cause an app to be removed. For example, according to Reuters, Chinese regulators recently removed the game Plague Inc from the App Store in China.

The Developer Takes It Down

Flappy Bird Mobile Phone Game

Another common reason is the developer removes the app. Some developers do this if an app is old, poorly reviewed, or has been replaced by a better application. They might also remove an app if they believe it could cause them legal trouble, like copyright infringement.

In one instance, an app was removed because it was generating too much attention for its developer. In 2014, Dong Nguyen, creator of Flappy Bird, removed the game from both the App and Play Stores. He said he felt people were becoming dangerously addicted to it, and he wanted to step out of the media limelight.

It's Region-Locked

Another reason you might not be able to find an app is it's only available in certain regions.

This is especially true for radio, media streaming, games, and music apps. These are frequently region-locked because they're not intended to be available for anyone outside the U.S. For example, the new streaming service Disney+ can't be downloaded from the App or Play Store by anyone who isn't in one of the countries in which it launched.

For those using Android devices, a potential work-around for this might be to download and install an APK file on your phone. However, the app might refuse to function outside of its region. For example, you might be unable to stream TV shows and movies that are geographically restricted to certain countries.

How to Find an App That's Missing From the Store

If you're using Android, getting an app that's not in the App Store is relatively easy. Many websites keep extensive databases of the APK files of various apps and their versions. However, you should be careful which websites you trust. Some might offer APK files containing malware.

We trust and recommend APKMirror. Download the app's APK file, and then install it on your device. If it's compatible with your phone, you should be able to use it without problems.

If you're using an iPhone or iPad, and you've downloaded the app in the past, you can get it by going to your "Purchased" screen in the App Store.

Otherwise, it might be trickier. Apple devices don't allow you to sideload apps on your phone out of the box. If you're committed to adding an old app, you can load an app file by jailbreaking your phone. However, we don't recommend this.
